BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Department of Library and Information Studies in the mgm casino School of Information Studies will match up to six scholarships of $5,000 each offered by the American Library Association (ALA) for students entering mgm casino's accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) program in Fall 2000.

The ALA annually funds 50 Spectrum Scholarships of $5,000 each to encourage and assist members of underrepresented groups to pursue careers in library and information science.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a member of one of the following groups: African American, African Canadian, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic or Native People of the U.S. and Canada.

Applicants first must apply and be accepted into mgm casino's MLS program and must apply for and receive the ALA scholarship. mgm casino then will provide an additional $5,000 scholarship, applied directly to the student's tuition account, to match the ALA scholarship for the first six accepted mgm casino applicants.

Completed applications for the 2000-01 ALA Spectrum Scholarship must be received no later than April 1. Applications may be obtained from the ALA or from the Department of Library and Information Studies, 534 Baldy Hall, mgm casino North Campus.

The deadline for the matching mgm casino scholarship is July 1. For further information about the scholarship program, call 645-2412, or visit the ALA Web site at .
